A Bit of My Background
I was brought up in Malaysia for the first 22 years of my life. There I went to kindergarten, primary, secondary (high school) and lastly university. I basically grew up there.
So if you know anything about Malaysia at all or any other Asian country, our education system was all focused on getting good grades, and so we have had to follow a strict grading system.
Which means, everyone or anyone in the school or class will know who has the greatest grade if you have an “A” in your subject or the lowest grade if you’ve got an “F” which also stands for fail.
So you can imagine it was a stressful environment to be in and honestly, I didn’t really enjoy my schooling days as much as I should.
Of course, I was a social butterfly in school and I enjoyed being around people. I enjoyed our school trips, being in the choir competition and other fun activities together and goofing around with my friends during recess. Those were fun times!
I Couldn’t Cope
But when it came to our education and learning, all I can remember was being stressed most of the time!
Even though I was in the top class for each year in school, I had to work really hard to get there and it was no fun because of the amount of stress I was in.
Because we were given TONS of homework, I always felt like I couldn’t cope because of the other extra-curricular activities and extra classes outside of school. To make matters worse, we also have tons of homework during our school holidays!
I always felt like if only I could have some sort of system or planner to manage my homework and schedule, I would have been more organized and productive. And if only the teachers would just give us a break!

A Huge Relief
I sure hope you’ve had a better learning experience than I did in school, because it was very challenging growing up in the education system in Malaysia. However, please don’t get me wrong. I don’t regret living in Malaysia. I actually still very much love my home country.
I am only speaking for myself and my experience in the education system in Malaysia. So much so, when I finally finished high school, it was such a HUGE relief! I was just SOOOoooo happy!!
When I left home to study in a cool design university in Kuala Lumpur, I LOVED every minute of it!! I was finally focusing in my zone of genius and it was such an incredible feeling doing what I love.
Having said that, some people do thrived in that kind of stressful environment, like my sister did for example. She excelled in almost every subject in school. Plus, she was in the same school as I was, in the same exact education I was in. But I believe, there is still room for improvement because kids do learn better when they’re less stressful and having fun.
Conclusion
That’s why I am SO THANKFUL to be in New Zealand because my kids have a different kind of education than I did. The school focuses on the strengths of the kids instead of focusing on just good grades. And when they find that out, they cater to the needs and strengths of each child and create lessons around them. My kids tell me that they enjoy school and have fun at the same time.
Now this is what I call leveraging – teaching kids in the areas they’re good at while having fun, it’s such a great way to learn isn’t it? You can absorb the information so much better and you’re doing what you like and are good at and most importantly, the kids are happier too. So smart!
Kids do learn better while they’re having fun and I hope you did too when you were a kid.
