Happy Mother’s Day! You might be wondering what happened.

How a Mother’s Day Event Turned Sour

That Friday, I was at a Mother’s Day event at my daughter’s kindergarten. There was this mini race which moms and their kids were encouraged to participate. I did the exact same race last year for Mother’s Day, so I thought,

“Here we go again“.

I didn’t like running or doing races and I had a gut feeling that day that something bad was going to happen.

But I ignored that feeling and get on with the race. Here I am with my daughter, holding a balloon in between ourselves trying not to drop it as we race to the finish line. As we were about to finish the race,I took a wrong step, tripped, fell and twisted my right ankle.

I heard a click sound just before I fell over and I thought to myself,

Oh oh, this doesn’t sound good.

I was in excruciating pain. I was doing my best to keep myself together from crying out loud. My daughter, Hannah on the other hand was pretty upset. I felt so bad for her and felt that the whole event was ruin because of me. I wasn’t able to do the rest of the activity with her because I was in so much pain.

That experience must have been quite traumatizing for a little girl to see her mom hurt herself so badly. I tried comforting Hannah as much as I can while trying to keep my composure and making sure the ice pack rested on my foot.

Accident and Emergency

In the end, one of her teachers brought me to the A&E.

I called my husband to meet me there. When I got there, I was checked by the nurse and she requested that I go next door (in the same building) to get my x-ray done. By then my ankle ballooned to the size of a golf ball.

I finally got my x-ray done and was shocked to find out that I’ve broken my fibula and torn a ligament on my other side of the same foot. No wonder I was in so much pain.

I was more in shocked when I found out that I had to be admitted immediately and get my surgery done on the same day. I left the doctor’s office and began crying at the waiting room from the shock I was in.

Talk about a stressful and overwhelmed Friday.

I was in daze and everything seemed like a bad, bad dream.

Only that it wasn’t.

Admitted to Hospital

My husband finally brought me to the hospital, I said my goodbyes to my kids and head into the emergency area of the hospital.

Thank God I was able to get into the ward shortly after I came in. Apparently there was a shortage of beds and they gave the beds to those who need them the most.

And here I am on my 4th day, celebrating Mother’s Day in the hospital all by myself. Although my husband visited me today, unfortunately, my kids weren’t able to visit me and I’m missing them terribly.

Sadly, the hospital wouldn’t allow any children to visit due to the increase number of Covid patients in Auckland. But thank God for the invention of video calls. I video call my children at least twice a day since I was admitted. It was one of the things that I looked forward to and the one thing that kept me sane in the hospital.

Waiting Patiently for My Surgery

From the first day I was admitted, the doctor will come in and say that I will be on the waiting list (for surgery) on that day. So I had to fast for at least 6 hours before my surgery. And then, was told at the last minute, I won’t have my surgery on that day. At times I had to fast for a total of 18 hours before I got the confirmation from the doctor that my surgery was cancelled. Again.

Another day would pass and the same thing will happen on the next day and the next day and the next.

It’s now the 4th day and unfortunately, I still haven’t gotten my surgery yet because of the lack of facility and resources in the hospital. Plus, there were also many urgent life threatening cases than mine and so that was why my surgery keeps getting pushed back.

As frustrated as I am, I am thankful and grateful that I’m still alive and well. Things would’ve gotten much, much worse and am thankful that at least I still have my hands in tact, if not forget about writing this blog post today.

Fortunately, I was told I would probably have my surgery tomorrow (for real this time), so please do say a prayer for me for a safe surgery and speedy recovery.

On a happy note – Happy Mother’s Day to all mommies out there! You are strong, resilient and ever so beautiful. Only God knows how much we do and sacrifice for our families.

May God bless you on today and every day of your lives! 🙂
